Evaluating and Contemplating...

My time during this year has been challenging for many reasons. I have found new skills and gone down new avenues to discover how I work best, using new materials and techniques to create various final pieces for each of my modules. I have enjoyed many aspects of this year, especially the researching and using new CAD techniques to incorporate into my work.

I enjoyed working upon the different packages on Adobe- Photoshop and Illustrator especially, as they helped me to create some of my favourite pieces- I defiantly think CAD is one of my strengths, and have found much more of a fondness for it, as I feel the final outcomes look professional and unique. Also, working on Final Cut and using the Mac computers for the first time. They were a challenge at first, to adapt to them and their features, however once completed, it helped me to produce one of my favourite pieces from this year- my video and collection package for Fashion Concepts and Digital Media.

I undertook my millinery elective again this year, enjoying it even more, it is something that I would consider looking into and doing again in the future. The process to make the final hat didn’t take as long as last time and I feel the techniques and methods we were taught had sunk in from the last time. I found it to be enjoyable and at the same time, something, in the future, I could grasp even further.

I have enjoyed making new things for different modules; including a bag for innovative cut and a stand for Research Practices, conducting presentations for Enterprise and doing photo shoots with my group for Application of Design. These let me explore new areas and give me added strength and understanding, to help me undertake my third and final year.

As in previous years, I have found Critical and Contextual Studies the most difficult. It seems to take me a while to grasp the ideas that I am taught and the essay work proved difficult. However, I will be taking part in an academic writing course, within the college to help me progress and complete my dissertation in my final year.

Next term seems daunting at the moment. It seems that the work involved will have added pressure and criticism, which it will, but through completing this year, I feel that I will be able to take on the challenge, using the skills that I have learnt throughout my two years being here and include them into my final module, and ultimately my final degree.

Careers- Fashion Designer

Fashion designers design and make clothes and accessories for their chosen area of design and market.

This will involve amending outfits, organising fittings and liaising with clients to decide what they want.

Fashion designers have to plan well ahead, working with buyers and forecasters to predict future trends, decide on fabrics and colours, and produce sample garments. The best designs may then be adapted for mass production.

Designers start on around £14,000 to £17,000 a year. This should rise with experience to anything from £25,000 to £55,000. As a top design director, you might earn £100,000 or more.

Deadlines, pressures and anti-social hours can intrude on your private life as you work through the night to prepare your latest creations for a fashion show. At other times, you would work normal hours- 9 to 5.

Fashion design is extremely popular and competition for places is tough. Womenswear is both the biggest segment of fashion design and the toughest to break into. Other areas, such as childrenswear and menswear, are less competitive.

Careers- Fashion Photographer

A Fashion Photographer works with models, stylists and lighting technicians for advertising agencies, magazines or design groups.

Photographers' work can appear anywhere from newspapers and magazines to billboards and textbooks. Much of their time is spent selecting locations and equipment, arranging lighting, positioning subjects and composing pictures.

Most fashion photographers work unsocial and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, and would have to go on external photo shoots on location, home and abroad.

The usual range of salaries for starting up photographers is between £12,000 and £22,000. Salaries at the top end of the profession range from around £35,000 to £70,000 and considerably more for those few photographers who become household names. Freelance photographers can earn from around £150 to £600 a day.

It is particularly hard to find an opening in fashion photography and vacancies are rarely advertised. Starting as an assistant and gradually building up a network of personal contacts is often the only way to proceed.

They have to persistent, able to take responsibility for their work and to accept criticism, and capable of producing many different types of write-up.

Careers- Fashion Journalist

A fashion journalist incorporates interesting, creative, entertaining and imaginative ways in which to discuss the fashion industry.

Their job would entail many tasks, including communicating the constantly changing fashion market to a wide audience, keeping on top of new ranges, designers and trends, attending press open days, catwalk shows, researching other fashion media, interviewing designers, organising and attending fashion shoots, writing and editing features and news stories.

Hours would vary, with no set hours- late evening work the norm. Deadlines would influence the amount of hours put in on a day to day basis.

The starting salary for a fashion journalist is £14,000-£16,000 rising to £22,500 with experience on board. National magazine journalists could reach £40,000

The fashion journalists frequently work with other within their field, such as photographers, TV/radio crews, designers and freelance writers.

They have to persistent, able to take responsibility for their work and to accept criticism, and capable of producing many different types of write-up.

Practicing My Research Skills...

We received this module just before Easter, so it gave me time to digest what was needed to be done. When I finally decided from which Critical and Contextual Studies lecture I was to base my research upon, I chose the one that I found to be the most interesting. This was Exhibitions and Audiences.

From my notes from this lecture I enjoyed the ideas of the modern artists and was influenced by a quote upon one of the slides.

'Resonant Echoes.

Each new object informs the understanding of the one we just saw, as well as the next.' Rugoff- 2006

This lead me to research into modern art, in a few of its different guises- Pop, Art Deco, Geometrical and Graphic. In compiling my research further, I then found another quote that inspired me further.

'Either be a work of art or wear a work of art.' Oscar Wilde

I looked at designers that have used modern art as their inspiration and then decided to use an artist to inspire me. I visited the 1853 Gallery in Saltaire, home to the works of David Hockney. His works are colourful and abstract, something that led me to use him as the main influence into my final collection. I chose him as I have enjoyed his work for many years and he uses shape and colouring well to accentuate areas of his work to make it eye catching and keep with its theme.

I chose a few of his paintings to use for the final line up, colour scheme and my exhibition stand- this of which was how my collection will be shown. Keeping with the Exhibitions and Audiences theme, I want my collection to be shown within an exhibition style, with pieces hung up around the room so the viewer can walk around it and see the garments up close. With a few of Hockney's paintings blown up on the walls to bring the colour and set the scene with the designs.
This module has been enjoyable, I liked researching the artists and visiting gallery's to influence me and also enjoyed incorporating colour and vibrancy into my work, as this is an area that I like to use within my work whenever possible.

Handbags, Gladrags, Fashion Concepts and New Media...

This module was one of the most interesting of the year so far. It involved so many different aspects that I had to research and to ultimately create one individual, different idea.

I chose to create a collection of bags that could be used in conjunction with women's office wear, targeting those in the city, who have to dress to impress and like to look smart. Using the influence of modern shapes and urban styling, I created a collection that employed both functionality and a smart office style for women on the move.

I then researched into where and what type of performance my collection would be introduced to the public, with the venue being a major factor in order to create the feel and the atmosphere that would suit its target market. Then linking my invitations and advertising with the office theme.

Finally, using Final Cut on the Mac, I created a final presentation, combining all of my research and ideas that promoted my final performance in a much more professional style. The editing and making this video took a long time, as it was the first time I had used either a Mac or Final Cut in this capacity. However, it was worth it and was one of the best things I have created this year.

This module was very challenging for many different reasons, but after it had all been handed in, I felt it was one of the best modules I had done, this could be due to its content being something that suited me and my style of working.

Realizing Digital Techniques...

At the beginning of this module, I was pleased to find that I would be learning more computer based skills, as in the past it is something I feel that I have lacked in the knowledge of. I had done small bits on Photoshop, when doing my CAD final line ups for previous modules, but still lacked proper knowledge- that I could take forward and develop the images further.

When we were shown the Illustrator techniques, it felt that the basics that I had learnt previously, in Photoshop, worked hand in hand with this application. They incorporate together well and I found that you need both packages to create something that appeals and looks professional.

However, when we were shown how to use Dreamweaver, within the 3 sessions, it took me longer to understand and grasp how to use it. The data that had to be put in place to ensure that your website would look professional and accessible made it a bit more complicated. But when it all clicked into place, I found it to be a interesting process that looked attractive and eye-catching when completed.

I had the same problem with Flash, in that it took me a while to get used to and to learn what and how to create the animations. In the end, I thought the animations looked really good when I finally got them working- however if I had more time, I would have added other functions and features to make them look much more creative and professional.

Creating the contents for my portfolio was a long process and took a lot of time to edit and create the images. However, the outcome made it worth the time and I did enjoy making them- even when my eyes hurt after staring at the computer all day!

This module was enjoyable, as I felt I have learnt more computer based skills that will defiantly be used again during my time at uni. The methods that I used are adaptable to any area of my work and I could use them for many of my portfolio pieces and others that I may create in the future.
